The Day I Left the Firm
Why I left the firm — the long answer.
Transcript
TSLPeople ask me why I left the firm. I usually give them the short answer. Today you get the long one.
TSLI sat in a partner meeting once. We spent forty-five minutes talking about whether we should upgrade to the bigger leather chairs in the conference room. Forty-five minutes.
TSLThat same week, a client called crying because nobody had returned her call in six days. Six days. And we had time to talk about chairs.
TSLI'm not saying that firm was evil. I'm saying it had its priorities backwards. The chair didn't pay the bills. She did. And we forgot.
TSLI left. Put on a T-shirt. Started picking up the phone on the first ring. Haven't been back.
