Following Distance
Arizona following distance law (ARS 28-730): "reasonable and prudent" is the statute. Three seconds is how you prove you were.
Transcript
TSLBack to the film room. Tonight. The freeway. A pickup. A sedan. And the space between them. Roll it.
TSLFollowing distance. The statute says: no closer than is reasonable and prudent. That's real. That's the law. The Reasonable Man wrote this one.
TSLThree seconds. The rule of thumb. Pick a sign. Count. One thousand one. One thousand two. One thousand three.
TSLThe Reasonable Man counts every time. The man behind him has never counted anything.
TSLThe Reasonable Man does not brake check. He does not speed up. He is not in a hurry. He has never been in a hurry.
TSLEventually the pickup passes. Angrily. Toward the exact same red light. Two exits down the road.
TSLSame light. Same minute. One of them is calm. Rear-end someone, and every conversation about fault starts with you.
TSLReasonable and prudent. It's in the statute. It's in the mirror. Look at it.
TSLSo. Have YOU ever actually counted three seconds? Once? Comments. Be honest.
TSLStudy the film. Count to three. Next week. The backyard pool. Attractive nuisance. You call it a pool. The law calls it a trap. Bring a lawyer.
